Fred was a retired maintenance worker with the Paintsville Golf Course and a member of the West Van Lear Free Will Baptist Church. Fred is preceded in death by his wife, Pamela Gaye Brooks Daniel. Fred is survived by 3 sons; James Michael Daniel of Thelma, Fred Norton Daniel II of Thelma, and Eric Dwayne Daniel of Thealka; 1 daughter; Ashley Nicole Jude of Hager Hill; 3 brothers; Earl Daniel, Charles Daniel, and John Daniel; 5 sisters: Rita Brooks, Janet Richmond, Patricia Hall, Anita Cole, and Ivory Castle; and 7 Grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled at the Sitka Free Will Baptist Church on Thursday from 6  P.M. until 9 P.M., on Friday from 12 noon until 9 P.M., and after 9 A.M. Saturday. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11 A.M. Saturday at the Sitka Free Will Baptist Church with Jim McKenzie officiating. Burial will follow at the Daniel Cemetery at Davis Branch.

Carlis Vernon Mills (2)Carlos Vernon Mills, age 81 of Paintsville, died Sunday June 11, 2017.  He was born October 26, 1936 to the late Altie Mollette and Hershel Mills.  Carlis was a member of the Chestnut Grove Enterprise Baptist Church.  He is survived by his wife Cleo Brown Mills, three brothers; Clarence Mills, Archie Mills of Springfield, OH, and John Mills Tomowhawk, KY: three sisters; Mary Barton of Martin County, KY, Francis Mills of Columbus, OH, and Sandra Kay Johnson of Inez, KY. Visitation will be after 12 noon Thursday at the Preston Funeral Home with  Grave side  services to be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Highland Memorial Park, with Roger Sparks officiating.

Nina Mae Fugitt age 88 died Thursday June 7, 2017.  She was born June 27, 1929 to the late William Edward and Edith Grace Hopkins Diley.   Nina was a teller with the Lawrence Federal Savings and Lone and a member Myrtle Ridge Baptist Church.  Along with her parents she is also preceded in death by her husband James Elmer Fugitt, one brother Luther Dilley, and one son James Fugitt Jr.  She is survived by two daughters Brenda (Bruce) Paul of Kitts Hill, OH, Teresa Malone of Cynthia, KY, three sisters Louella Pinson of Kitts Hill, OH, Enolla Cade of Arabara, OH, Wilma Thompson of Mansfield, OH, three grand children three great grand children and two great great grand children.  Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Myrtle Ridge Baptist Church in Kitts Hill, OH. Funeral services will be held a t 2 p.m. at the Myrtle Ridge Baptist Church in Kitts Hill, OH. with Woodrow Walls, Jr and Tim Burge officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mamry Cemetery in Kitts Hill, OH.

Juanita Lemaster (2)Juanita Lemaster,  age 67, died Thursday June 8, 2017 in Paintsville, KY.   She was born January 1, 1950 to the late James and Maggie Reed Tackett McCloud.  Juanita is survived by two sons; Charles Robert VanHoose of Lakeland, FL, Martin VanHoose Jr. of Lakeland, FL; one daughter, Wanda Moore of Flat Gap, and special son in law David Moore; one brother, David Tackett of Paintsville; three sisters: Billie Jean VanHoose of Brittany, OH, Stella Tackett of Paintsville, Patsy Christine Ward of Paintsville, two grand children and one great grand child.  Visitation will be held Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Preston Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Sunday at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel with  burial to follow in the Kimbler Cemetery at Flat Gap, KY.

Brenda BanksBrenda Barker Banks age 67 died Saturday June 3, 2017.  She was born August 10, 1949 to the late Johnnie and Lizzie Lemaster Baker.  Brenda was a member of the Chestnut Grove Enterprise Baptist Church and a dental assistant with Castle’s Dentistry.  She is survived by her husband Fred Banks one step son Mike Banks of Whitesburg, KY, one step daughter Diana Adams of London, KY three brothers Kendrick Baker of Jackson, OH, Dan Harmon Baker of Flat Gap, KY, Robert Baker of Flat Gap, KY.  Visitation will be held Monday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Preston Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Terry Conley, Lindsey Meade and Tim Salyer officiating.  Burial will follow in the Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville, KY.

flower 2Katherine Joan Haines Williams, age 69 of Stambaugh, died Monday May 29, 2017. Katherine was born Jan. 27, 1942 in Baltimore, Md. to the late Glen & Lucy Moore Haines. She is survived by her husband Hobert, and a half brother Terry Moore of Va. Katherine was a packer for McCormick Spice Co. and a member of the Baptist Church. At the request of the family, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

IMG_2770Ruth Ann Sloas, age 69 died Tuesday May 23, 2017 in Ashland KY.  She was born February 25, 1948 to the late Eugene and Madge Lambert Haney.  Ruth worked for Mountain Comprehensive Care and was a member of the Highland Church of Christ.  She is survived by her husband Bill Sunday Sloas, three sons J.J. Townsend of Lexington, KY Tommy Allen Thompson of Mt. Sterling, KY, Johnny  Sloas of Paintsville, one daughter Billie Sloas of Lexington, KY, one sister Belinda Robert of Middletown, OH, six grand children.  Visitation is Friday from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. at the Preston Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at  1 P.M. Friday at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Isaac Whitt and J.J. Townsend  officiating.  Burial will follow in the Garvin Ridge Cemetery at Olive Hill, KY.

flower 5Mary Magelene Collins Wells, age 77, of Prestonsburg died Monday May 22, 2017 at Highlands Regional Medical Center. She was born October 18, 1939 in Van Lear to the late Richard and Veneda Faye Dennison Collins. On April 4, 1957 in Paintsville she married Everett Abner Wells who preceded her in death February 13, 2011. Surviving her death are two sons: Jeff Wells of Nashville, TN, Matthew Wells of Van Lear; one daughter: Patty Hitchcock ( Ronald) of Paintsville; four brothers: James Robert Collins of Inez, Richard Collins of East Point, Rex Allen Collins of Lowmansville, Ray Dwayne Collins of Inez; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  Friends may visit the Preston Funeral Home on Wednesday May 24, 2017 from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled 11 a.m. Thursday May 25, 2017 at the Preston Funeral Chapel with Shawn Slone officiating. Burial to follow at the Webb & Wells Cemetery at Van Lear.


George E. “Grub” Melvin, age 78 of Paintsville, died Saturday May 20, 2017 in Paintsville, KY. George was born May 13, 1939 at Davis Branch, KY to the late Estill & Gladys Fraley Melvin. George was a self employed carpenter. Mr. Melvin is survived by his wife Vina Profitt Melvin; one son, James Edward Melvin and his wife Jennifer; 2 brothers, Andy Melvin of Chipley FL., and Larry Michael Melvin of Paintsville; 1 sister, Cora Cordle of Westerville, OH; 3 Grandchildren, and 3 Great Grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, May 21 from 5 P.M. until 9 P.M. at the Preston Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 A.M.
